Unfortunately, closure is planned of this essential service which provides the means of accessing mobility equipment to West Midlands residents.
A petition has been raised by a local disabled mother and calls upon the owners of Bullring to prevent closure of the service. Getting news of this to the people who use the service and those who support it is not easy, hence this article.
Located in level 2 of the Centre Car Park at Bullring, in return for a small charge people who have mobility problems can hire wheelchairs (manual and electric) and mobility scooters and so gain access to Birmingham City Centre’s shopping and business facilities.
The Registered Charity – Access Committee for Birmingham – which was formed in 1981 is responsible for the operation of Birmingham Shopmobility,
The trustees of the Access Committee for Birmingham have been unsuccessful in securing funds to continue to operate the service. As a result they have announced their intention to cease management and hence Birmingham Shopmobility will close down on 31st March 2016.
