Local news

Birmingham City Council has launched its Emergency Transport Plan, outlining plans for a wide range of measures to support walking, cycling and public transport across the city, in light of Covid-19.

To enable people to use the city’s parks and open spaces safely during the coronavirus pandemic, the council’s grounds maintenance team has come up with a social distancing solution: crews mowing grass at the city’s 591 sites are now cutting ‘channels’ that are roughly two-metres in width to support social distancing in our parks.

Boxes of personal protective equipment (PPE) – donated by the city of Nanjing, one of Birmingham’s partner cities in China – will now be used by the council in its frontline response in tackling Covid-19. More than 330,000 items of PPE have so far been distributed to care settings across Birmingham by the city council.

If you are a Commercial Tenant with the council, we urge you to make sure you get in touch if you need further support with anything in these difficult times.

If you are looking for work, city care homes urgently need compassionate hard workers as kitchen, domestic, maintenance, personal care and admin staff during the Covid-19 outbreak – and beyond. You could make a real difference and help keep our vulnerable people safe. Training is provided and recruiters, West Midlands Employers, say the safety and wellbeing of staff is a priority. Register for #TimeToCare and find out more.

Birmingham Careers Service is still providing free careers advice and help to young people including applying for apprenticeships, traineeships, colleges and creating CVs to help them to move forward with their career goals.  If you – or anyone you know – are 16-19-year-olds and in need of careers guidance, the service is still here for you.

Visit Birmingham has created an ‘at home’ section on its website highlighting a range of virtual events and tours and much more.

Join Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park for a ‘virtual’ tour of the park!
