Centro has announced plans for a bus-type rapid transport system to run along the No9 bus route from Colmore Row along Broad Street and Hagley Road up to Quinton. This could be operational by 2016. Operated like a tram with dedicated lanes but without the supporting infrastructure and using vehicles similar to modern buses, they will provide for and encourage drivers to travel into the city without their cars saving large sums incurred in current traffic congestion.

This will be a first for the UK although such systems are already successfully operation in European cities such as Gothenberg, Barcelona, Metz and the Île-de-France region.

Costing around £15 million and it will be funded via Centro and also through government grants to the Greater Birmingham and Solihull LEP.

.

Centro will be gauging public opinion by holding the following street consultations:

Tuesday 12 August 12-6pm in Victoria Square
Saturday 6 September 9-3pm in High Street by M&S

You can also fill in the online questionnaire.

You can find more details on the Sprint website.
